How to calculate print size for your photos

Mar 2, 2016

I am trying to print large awesome pics for Queen's Vets using Photoshop and sending image to the printer.

Minimum size is 240 ppi to get awesome print but most people say it is 300 ppi.

CALCULATION
Divide the longest edge of image (pixels) by the longest edge of the desired print size (inches) to get the ppi.

E.g.
1.  Image 3840x5760 pixels and you want a 8"x10" print
Calculation:   5760/10 = 576 ppi.
Good resolution.

2. If I want a 30"X20" poster,    5760/30 = 192 ppi. Not good resolution.

I have the following image   1920px x 1280 px  size = 7.03M
If I want a 10" x 8" print,   1920/10 = 192 ppi.  Insufficient resolution. Waste of money to print it at 10" x 8" print.

27. How to make BKTP Vet Educational Videos - interns

Dec 2, 2015

I have a feedback from recent RI interns that they are not given the structure on making a video.

When you come in, please review other videos made (at least 2 made) and produce a video for interns on how to make a veterinary educational video. There are past videos done but I need a formal process for prospective interns on the movie structure. It saves me time explaining repeatedly and many interns do not research on my website as well as you did and rectify the feedback to the RI teacher about the recent internship of 2 RI boys.
Basically, the movie structures for BKTP Vet Educational Videos are:
1. Hook (video clip preferred to attract viewer).
2. BKTP slide and sponsors (gather all slides in one webpage)
3. Introduction includes theme and title
4. Middle - Veterinary problems and solutions (90% of content). Diagnosis and treatment.
Insert relevant links into video
5. End - Advices and Tips (Impact of disease).
6. Credits and further information at: .........contact numbers......................
7. URL of excellent intern videos (5 examples).

8. A script must be produced first. 2 columns. Left column is script text. Right column is video footage.

9. Is it possible to create URL of youtube on how to use windows movie maker and imovie?
With your video, there will be no more inconsistencies and waste of time in video production.
Thank you.

How to treat very smelly ears in a labradoodle - educational video

This 5-month-old labradoodle has hairy and infected ear canals. Ear hair plucking and cleaning of the ears must be done weekly by the owner or groomer. However, the puppy objected to ear cleaning and hair plucking by the groomer. The inside of the ears become ulcerated and infected, leading to very smelly ears. The owner sought veterinary treatment at Toa Payoh Vets Singapore.

There are 3 methods of treatment depending on the professional judgment of vets consulted.
METHOD 1. MEDICATED EAR DROPS. One inexpensive method by many vets is to prescribe medicated ear drops and the owner applies the drops at home regularly. I find this method, in this case of very smelly hairy ears, ineffective.
METHOD 2. EAR IRRIGATION.  In Toa Payoh Vets, in such cases, the ear canals are irrigated to flush out the blood clots, bacteria and debri, after ear hair plucking.
This dog is sedated for this process. There is always the anaesthestic risk which deter many owners from accepting the second method. In healthy puppies and dogs, the risk is very low, but many owners do not want anaesthesia. So, the otitis externa get worse and become chronic.
METHOD 3.  EAR SURGERY. A lateral ear canal resection surgery which opens up the vertical ear canal by removing the side wall. After surgery, the ear is well ventilated and able to drain any water owing to bathing of the dog. This leads to no more head shaking and smelly ears and no need to go for the dreaded (by the dog) painful ear hair plucking every 2-3 months by the groomer.

In this dog, the owner prefers METHOD 2. She maintains the ears and 7 months since the ear irrigation, as at Nov 25, 2015, I have not seen the dog again.

How to organise your work and life - online to-do lists and apps

Oct 31, 2015

PC Tech & Authority Issue 205 Dec 2014

Online to-do lists advantages:
1. Being searchable. - keywords, people's names
2. Gives you structure.  Allow you to set priorities and deadlines to tasks. What's important and what m b done immediately, done next month, no fixed dealine, isn't important and m b crossed off
3. All have iOS and Android apps. Todoist has Windows 8 app
4. Tie in with google or facebook, no need to remember another password.

TOP 5 ONLINE TO-DO LISTS

1. TODOIST  ease of use and advanced features. Press Q to add new task. many keyboard shortcuts. US$31/year for Premium feature if you click too  many buttons reasonable. Windows 8 app for offline usage.

2. TOODLEDO  choice as it has big support community. Author of article uses this app.

3. REMEMBER THE MILK  dated interface large user base
4. ANY.DO.  Simple to use
5. WUNDERLIST   simple task manager that looks great too. Need to drag task to folders not drop down menus.

HOW TO BECOME ORGANISED
1. Set up an account
2. Capture all nagging tasks you have to do on pieces of paper. Go thru email, daybook, diary, voicemail, projects and associate tasks. At least one hour to do this.
3.  Group together PROJECTS from pieces of paper.
4. Type in those tasks.
5. Don't put in false deadlines if there is none. Toodldo is good as it leaves this to the author.

In this way, you have A STRUCTURE OR ORDER OF projects you're are working on, no. of tasks associated with each one, good ideas of deadlines approaching

EMAIL is communication, NOT a to-do list.
Avoid reading email twice or more. Paralle to this task, clear your inbox. Create a folder "zArchive" and move all your existing inbox and subfolders there. "zArchive" forces folder to sit at bottom of your list.

Now create 4 folders; ACTION, WAITING, PERSONAL, WORK
Also ORGANISATIONS YOU WORK WITH.

1. If you can respond to an email in 2 minutes, do so.
2. Delete emails unless it contains valuable reference info
3. If it requires more time than 2 minutes, move it to ACTION folder for reference or turn it into an action on your online to-do list.
4. The key is to avoid looking at emails twice unless necessary.

BACK TO PAPER IF YOU LIKE
Now you have a clear inbox, a list of projects you are working on, an idea of the most important tasks to complete, you must set up all your devices (mobile, tablets etc) to synchronise, so that you can add tasks - mark them as completed - wherever you are.

Author creates a DAILY lists each morning from the "master" list on Toodledo, based on most urgent tasks he has been avoiding. Cross out the tasks done at the end of the day.

There will be good and bad days or weeks. You can always reset the process and start fresh.

How to make your foturne from Youtube

pcandtechauthority.com.au  Mar 2015

book on how to turn your idea into a storming success on youtube
http://tinyurl.com/nb4sjsl

Below explains how YouTube channels make their money

1. Monetisation thru AdSense programme
2. Temptation tominimise the ad formats for new channels but YouTube has algorithms to reduce ads if viewers click them off.

Different formats
1. Standard In-stream - non-skippable format. must watch advert in full before video will play. 70% play all way through. You are likely to make more money.

2. Trueview In-stream.  Skippable after 5 seconds.
20-50% of viewers watch the whole ad. Your channel is paid if someone watches whole ad o 30 seconds of a longer ad.

3. Invideo Overlay
At bottom of video. Can be closed. Earn money on a cost-per-clic basis. Least valuable of all ad formats. Advertisers interested in people visiting their site will pay good money for per-click basis for some topics.

4. Display Units

show on the YouTube holding page not on video itself. Standard clickable banner ads.
Poor response from users. Little revenue.

5. Trueview In-display
companies make their own videos on YouTube. these link to other video content on YouTube.Generate good revenue.

6. Product placement
Good evenue for established channels. Prominent placement for a product in your video. Company that wants to place their product inyourchnnel. E.g. Jenna Marbles (13 million subscribers.Bella Beachwear swim wear in the video.

7. Tracking your earnings

YouTube Analytics. ---> Estimated Earnings report for content, channel and each individual video

8.Channel performance

3 blocks.  Total estimated earnings; ad earnings and transaction earnings. Only first 2 will be applicable unless you supply rental content.

8. Estimated Earnings

Graph. daily, weekly, monthly

9. Big Earners
Top 10 best performing videos on your channel. Individual video or use search box to find more. Whole playlist performance.  "Estimated monetised playbacks" tab is onlyestimated earnings. Goto downloadable earnings reports in the Reports Tab of YT Analytics e.g the Performance Reports section - previous month earnings.

10. Analytics

Full set of analytics, need to download the report.  Performance of everything on your channel, individual kinds of ad available to you. Filter your earnings toknow whether your revenue comes from YT viewers or embedded content elsewhere o the web.

The reports are a goldmine of info for larger channels. For you, estimated earnings best place to go.

FOUR WAYS TO KEEP YOUR AUDIENCE WATCHING
1. Use playlists
Imagine you curate a set of videos. When you put one video in the playlist, imagine yourself as a viewer. What would you be interested in the next video?

2. Keep viewers in suspense

Not only compelling content but give verbal prompts e.g. "later in the programme, we tell you how?" "Find out what happens after the break"

3. Programme your content
Create a regular schedule. Let people know in advance certain things at certain times.Build expectations. Think of your contents as episodes rather than one-offs. "The box-set effect" where viewers watch one video to the next.

4. Link with annotations
Added after uploaded he video. Used to link to any poiint in the vieo, back to your website or - most importanly - to anyother video or playlist on YT.

How to write crime fiction - Sue Grafton

Sep 21, 2015

Tips from Sue Grafton

1. She keeps a journal which has all the ideas and rantings for the book.
2. After a 5-mile walk and breakfast, shower, email, facebook.  Keeps a journal for each novel - about writing of the book to herself. e.g. in W,  660 double spread pages for the book.  1268 single-spaced page journal.

Every sentence is edited before the end of the chapter so that she does not need to do it. She writes every sentence over and over till it is right. If tone or pace is off, goes back to do again. No rough draft as she has fixed it in early chapter. Very slow process. Takes a year to write a novel. Incapable of doing rough draft or work in team. Write everyday. Gives meaning to her life. Now 75 years at X.

Folly to assign meaning to every chance event or synchronicity - odd things happen. Use it as a launching pad ie. lead with it.

e.g. in W,  dead unscrupulous private investigate and dead homeless man.

3. Mystery noval (Crime fiction) is 3 categories
amateur sleuth, the police procedure, the private eye (Raymond Chandler, Dashell Hammett, Marsha McDonnell).

4. Essentials in writing a mystery novel
 How to structure a story
 How to write a dialogue
How to get into and out of a scene
 How to do action.
Use enough details to bring a scene to life.
Reader v writer contest.  Reader figures out what happens. Write - magic. Why do we kill each other. What makes people cross the line?  No gore.

Focus on writing, not be distracted. volunteer work etc.
Quit worrying about doing I right. Writing is like play..
Shadow is intuition. unconscious. a bad person. Ego is the good person.

Everybody is in confessional mode nowadays.

Keeps an elaborate chart of what  she's done andwhere  she's been.

5. Do not repeat stories in a series.
6. Function dictates form.
7. Multiple points of views must be balanced with POV of protagonist.

8. Create suspense. Readers more interested in who will win or get away with the crime, not who does it.

9. Too many characters will not work.  e.g. 14 characters in a TV series.
10. Too many storylines will  not work.   Use one.
  e.g. elderly abuse.
11. Connect two storylines  e.g. elderly abuse and child abuse (paedophiles).  Same phenomenon as both are predators.

12.  Shadow side and Ego side.
Our impulse dictates life for the layman.

13. Better to do page count. 2pages a day. Page count in 20 minutes is good.

17. How to take care of your old dog's eye

A 13-year-old Silkie has sticky right eye discharge everyday for several months.

"Dr E prescribed  eye drops and eye ointment and they were effective for some time," the wife took out the bottles from the plastic bag and put on my consultation table. "After a while, they don't work and I went to the pet shop to buy the eye drops. I don't want the same eye medication from you."
17. How to take care of your old dog's eye  (Video)

Surprisingly, the left eye cornea was as clear as a crystal but the right eye cornea was scarred with brown dots of pigments covering 80% of the surface. The eye white was reddish as compared to the normal white of the left eye.

"Has the dog been rubbing his right eye with his right hind leg daily?" I asked.
"Yes, yes," the husband said.
I applied fluorescein eye drops onto the cornea (video) and there was no ulcerations as there was no green stain.

"The brown pigments on the right eye cornea are caused by long-time scratching and now is scarred," I said. "There is no chance of reverting to the clear cornea. Now, we need to prevent the 20% of the cornea from becoming covered up with brown pigmentation."

"The possible causes could be the right ear pain as the dog wanted to snap at me when I palpated the ear. Another cause could be tooth ache as the roots of the back upper teeth are exposed and the teeth are cemened with thick tartar," I explained to the owners.

Sedation 5 kg, 13-year-old  Silkie: Domitor + Ketamine 0.05 + 0.05 ml IV
Ear irrigation
Eye irrigation with 3rd eyelid everted to flush out debri
Optomimmune and eye drops. E-collar.
Inj. antibiotic and anti-inflam.
E-collar for 2 months.

To review in 3 weeks and dental scaling.

CONCLUSION
Allergy to commercial ear drops, vigorous overcleaning of the right ear and periodontal diseases can cause ear scratching with collateral damage to the right eye in this case. Early dental scaling would have been preferred.

How to make a good adventure video

Australian Geographic  Outdoor www.agoutdoor.com  jul/aug 2014

PLAN

RIGHT EQUIPMENT

FEW SKILLS

Tightly edited with a mix of viewpoints, angles, a catchy soundtrack of both music and voiceover.

1. INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE

2. TELLING A STORY
3. THE ESSENTIALS
3.1  ACTION CAMERA      GoPro Hero3+ Black edition   RRP$529  www.gopro.com

3.2  DSLR  Canon EOS 70D   $1275.  Has touch-screen autofcouc, using the rear display screen.  Can shift smoothly from foreground subject to background subject easily.  Large no. of EOS lenses.

3.3 MICROPHONE  RODE Stereo VideoMic Pro   RRP $349  www.rodemic.com
compact, robust, easy to use. the SVMP ideal for outdoor use. An integrated shock mounting system to reduce mechanical noise and vibrations, cool+20dB level boost feature --- excellent audio

3.4  SOFTWARE
Adobe Premiere Pro $19.95/month
Complex.

3.5  MIXING IT UP
Multiple angles of view to keep story telling fresh.  Not just same plane such as eye level. Get down low. Wide angle help "locate"   - people involved too small and hard to see.  "Piece to camera" - person talks directly to camera.  Medium close-ups - person in frame and some background location or surroundings. Mood footage e.g sunrise, sunset, long shot of a big river, close up of a paddle dipping in a river.  Moving image - close-up and more distant footage shows emotion and action.

3.6  SOUND ADVICE.  for $150-300, A CAMERA-MOUNTED MICROPHONE (RODE range mics excellent or opt for lapel mike. Record plenty of audio during trip - can use audio track as a voice-over narration. Along with editing process - not easy to do. Being able to do sound grabs or interviews to camera is NECESARY to add  interest to the final video, together with voice-over narratives.

3..7 THE FINAL WORD.
Edit hours of footage into a 5-10-min adventure video is least enjoyable but most important part of the documentary making process.  Editing  - use higher-end editing software, merge different tpes of footage, cool storyline, variety of camera angles, audio/soundtrack combination to keep viewers intrigued.

Starting out. Apple's iMovie.  Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, Apple's Final Cut Pro are the big ones.

TOP TIPS

1. Some type of mount system for video gear. Add essential stability to your footage and worth their weight.

2. Stick with what you know. What footage will interest your audience.
3. Priority purchase for a DSLR to get an on-camera external microphone - audio quality compared to incamera mic is amazing.
4. Capture different angles of view and perspectives to maintain viewer interest.

e.g.  4 seconds per shot is standard for modern editing. long/wide shots for establishing locations, mid shots for action, close-ups for personal executions like interviews.

15. Toilet training your puppy Case 1/10

TOILET TRAINING PUPPY IN THE CITY - How to train your new puppy to pee and poop in the correct way

Dr Sing Kong Yuen
www.toapayohvets.com

Case 1/10
First written; June 28, 2005
Updated:  April 1, 2015

"Not a visitor for the whole day," Janet, the pet shop girl in her early 20s, wiped her nose with the tissue paper said to me when I vaccinated her 3 puppies at 5 p.m. She was licensed to sell puppies by the veterinary authority but she has 4 puppies for sale compared to more than 20 from the competitor down the road.

It was Tuesday, June 28, 2005, the second day of the school term for students going to school including the junior colleges. Had Singapore slided into an economic recession? Yet the well-stocked established competitor down the road had several prospective buyers when I was there a few minutes ago to vaccinate the puppies.

A part-timer, a muscular young man in an orange sleeveless T-shirt, a student studying Chemical Engineering was surfing wirelessly on his note book. "Did you tap on the cafe's broad band," I asked him as the pet shop's policy was to prevent no broadband access to discourage malingering. Several young adults of around 20 years old are employed by the pet shop as part-time to clean the puppy cages and do sales of puppies and accessories. However, they loved to surf the internet, chat and post on message boards like www.friendstar.com, neglecting the prospective buyers..

The working hours are long from 10 am to 10 pm and the shop opens seven days a week. It is physically tiring. "Why don't you write a book on puppy toilet training just for your puppy buyers during your free time?" I asked the fair complexion pet shop girl who was the sister of the proprietor of the shop. "Many of them have no clues as to what to do after buying the puppy from the pet shop. If you give or sell them a book on the Singaporean situation, they will remember you as no other pet shop bothers to do such a book."

She shook her head. The flu viruses had drained her soul. "Have you got good antibiotics for me?" she sniffed and rubbed her red nose. "Some good ones you use for your puppy's kennel cough. Or for cat flu." I asked her to seek proper human medical attention. She said, "My doctor's medicine are ineffective."

"You should be at home resting," I advised. "Antibiotics are ineffective against the flu viruses." Her obligations as a proprietor must be fulfilled as the shop must have at least one operator at any one time so as not to close the shop and losing business.

She then explained to me how to toilet train the puppy. "Good hands-on experience is needed," she had advised the buyer verbally. Don't ask her to write a book  even if that would help her increase sales. There are better things to do in life when you are twenty-something. She is typical of the young adults. In any case, most young adults do not like writing or reading.

"If the puppy buyer can afford to pay $50.00, I will recommend the grated crate for small breeds like the Shih Tzu. This crate has a pee tray below the grate. The urine and stools drop through the gaps in the grated floor onto the pee tray, keeping the puppy clean.

"The newspapers on the pee tray cannot be shredded by the puppy. The tiled floor of the house or apartment will not be soiled as the pee-tray traps the puppy's waste. In addition, the walls of the pee-tray will not collapse on an active puppy, unlike the 4 fences forming a play pen or puppy pen."
Many puppy owners buy the cheaper 4 panels of fencing to form a playpen to enclose the new puppy. The cost could be $30.00.  The pet shop girl sold a puppy and the crate while I was at the shop. I snapped an  image as shown below.

To toilet train the puppy, take it out from the crate to smell the newspaper placed outside the crate. A house-breaking solution bought from the pet shop is sprayed on the newspaper. The puppy is supposed to pee and poop on the newspaper after smelling this solution.

That is the theory behind the sale of the product. Some new puppy owners find it not effective. A better alternative, in my opinion, is to wet the newspapers with the puppy's own urine. The newspapers outside the crate and the crate must also be enclosed to prevent the puppy roaming around the whole apartment. A good location will ht be the guest bathroom, usually found beside the kitchen in many apartments.

The puppy should be confined, that is, housed in this manner for around 4 weeks so that it learns the proper way to pee and poop.  Most Singaporean puppy owners let the puppy roam the whole apartment. The puppy pees and poops everywhere, hence the owner becomes a failure in toilet-training the new puppy.

How many first-time puppy buyers in Singapore inn 2005 have knowledge of toilet training? Not many as compared to 2015 where such knowledge can be found in the internet.

In the past years, a puppy gets
beaten up every time it soils the whole apartment. After several beatings, a seem to know where the owner wants it to pee and poop, but this negative reinforcement method of training is not recommended as it is said to be puppy abuse.
Who actually looks after the puppy at home? It may be the domestic worker or the mother who is not present when the puppy is purchased. So, the poor puppy does not get properly trained as there is no "instruction manual" unlike buying a camera. There are many puppy books available nowadays but the toilet-training topic is usually not covered in detail.

How to neuter a dog in the shortest time - productivity, efficiently and safely

Feb 24, 2015

SEEING IS BELIEVING

The textbooks have all their information but the hands-on practice, recording and observation of anaesthesia hones a vet's skill and expertise in anaesthesia and surgeries at least cost and provide a high level of safety for the pet.

I produce two videos to share my over 30 years of experiences on neutering a dog safely and efficiently with my Myanmar vet assistant with injectable anaesthesia. No isoflurane gas was used if the surgery is started and ended within 21 minutes from injection to final skin stitching

Sheltie, Male, 7 months, 5.6 kg. 38.7C

INJECTABLE ANAESTHESIA
For a young healthy dog, the formula is as follows:
10 kg, young    Dom = 0.4 ml   Ketamine =0.5ml in one syringe IV
Duration of analgesia (no pain, no movement) =  15 minutes

This dog was given D=0.2 ml and Ketamine 0.25 ml IV. Very good analgesia and safety.

PRE-OP
Clip surgical area first. This dog was excitable and so this was done after the injection of anaesthetic.

A: Injection of Dom + Ketamine    10.47am
D: First skin incision                       10.56 am
E: Completion of skin stitching       11.08 am

E-D = 12 min  (neuter took 12 min).
E-A = 21 min

Each testicle from incision to the final cut = 3-4 min
lst testicle  10.56 am - 10.59 am
2nd testicle  10.59am - 11.03 am

Antisedan given at 11.30 am. Dog stands up at 11.35 am. All OK.

SURGERY
3-forceps method
Suture Caprosyn /0   absorbable nylon type.

CONCLUSION
No isoflurane gas top up is needed if the vet knows exactly the effects of domitor and ketamine for young dogs in neutering.

How to advise the owner - skin lump in an old Miniature Schnauzer

Feb 22, 2015. 4th day of Chinese New Year.

A tail lump in an old Miniature Schnauzer - what to do?

When faced with a skin lump, veterinary opinions differ. Some vets will advise "wait and see", prescribing some antibiotics. I will advise excision as it may or may not be cancerous. It will be up to the owner to make the final decision.

The vet should NOT advise "wait and see". Give the owner the option to excise or not to do it as the lump may be pre-cancerous or cancerous.

In this case, the old dog had a circular skin lump 8 mm x 8 mm x 3 mm. It looked very much like a ringworm. Dr Daniel said it could possibly by a result of licking or biting as the old dog had anal sacculitis, with thick brown oil expressed by me earlier.

I advise the owner to get the lump taken out by excision with a 1-cm resection margin ideally. A 1-cm skin margin would permit any present cancerous cells, if any, be removed, leaving little chance of recurrence.

This was not possible as there was insufficient skin and the tail would have to be taken out. The owner wanted to keep the tail stump. She gave informed consent to excise the lump without the margin. Histology was approved.

Dr Daniel operated. The lump was not cancerous based on histology. Dr Daniel's opinion was that this could be due to the dog's anal sacculitis itchiness and licking and that the lump could be inflammatory.

In an old dog, it is best NOT to wait and see. If the dog's lump is cancerous or turn cancerous later, there will be no good words for the vet's competence from family members.

In this case, the skin lump was not cancerous. Everybody is happy. This could be a case of tail gland tumour based on its location. I had seen one in a Siberian Husky some years ago.
